Group of Roman Effenberg

Our research team focuses on the surface modification of nanoparticles with functional molecules for their further use as components of biologically active self-assembling systems or for the construction of biosensors.

Building Blocks for Liposomal Therapeutic Systems and Recombinant Vaccines

In particular, we focus on the preparation of compounds which, after incorporation into liposomes, enable their subsequent modification with biologically active molecules. These include recombinant proteins, substances enhancing the immune response (adjuvants), fluorophores, and ligands allowing the targeted delivery of liposomal formulations to specific sites within the organism.

We are also engaged in the preparation of adjuvants themselves, as well as carbohydrate or peptide ligands and their subsequent applications. This combination of the entire portfolio of synthesized compounds enables us to make a significant contribution to research leading to the development of new recombinant vaccines, therapeutics, and theranostics in collaboration with other research institutions.

Diagnostic Biosensors

Another area of our research is the development of systems capable of decoding specific binding interactions of biomolecules and converting this information into a physically measurable signal. These biosensors are particularly suitable as tools for the early identification of tumour-specific molecules and cells in body fluids, pollutants present in drinking or wastewater, and other substances depending on their surface modification.

To achieve our goals, it is necessary to design new chemical structures, synthesize them, and carry out their complete structural characterization. Our group is strongly connected with the non-academic sector, with the aim of commercial and practical application of the scientific results achieved.
